Natural San Diego Harbor Provides Impeccable Location For Thriving Community
Ever since Spanish explorers began to explore Southern California in the late 16th century, the San Diego area with its scenic natural bay has been considered a prime location to live and work. That tenet still holds true today as this natural harbor is the third largest protected bay on the California coastline behind San Francisco Bay and Humboldt Bay. Measuring 12 miles long and one to three miles wide, the harbor is a prime location for San Diego real estate as it is home not only to gorgeous scenery, but also to a number of attractions and a vibrant local community.
As one of the best natural harbors in North America, San Diego Bay remains home to the sole remaining U.S. naval base on the west coast, housing several aircraft carriers and a number of other naval assets. The bay is also home to a commercial port that handles more than three million metric tons of cargo annually. Two cruise ship terminals are also located in the harbor.
The San Diego-Coronado bridge spans the harbor, providing convenient access to both sides of the bay. Built in 1969, the bridge rises to a height of 200 feet so that most of the U.S. Navy’s fleet can pass under it. Not only does the bridge provide convenient transportation for area residents, it is also picturesque, particularly when naval craft and other vessels are sailing through the bay.
Another feature that make nearby San Diego homes desirable is the harbor’s shallow southern end that includes salt ponds, Sweetwater Marsh and other natural areas within the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Residents have easy access to the bay and wetlands that feature walking trails and educational exhibits.
The harbor area also houses a wealth of museums, shops and restaurants, not to mention marinas for those inclined to spend time sailing or enjoying a powerboat or small yacht. The Embarcardo along Harbor Drive has virtually everything a family would want in terms of entertainment, shopping and dining. Here residents can find the Maritime Museum and the Midway Museum, the latter detailing the history of the famous aircraft carrier and several harbor cruise proprietors that can provide an afternoon or evening of relaxation on the water. Seaport Village is another harbor area with a wealth of shops and restaurants catering to every taste.
